This model, "SLIGO", is a 2-piece keyless flute in the key of D (non-transposing). Additional distinguishing features are its slender wood tenon, short D foot, and 3 flat bands in Sterling silver. You may wish to compare the emphasized features with those of "CLARE".

"SLIGO" sounds loud and clear for superb performance of Irish music. Classic features include elliptical blowhole and conical bore for the rich harmonics required. With its own tuned bore and profiled, undercut toneholes, this flute gives a clear, buildable tone and crisp ornamentation. Excellent harmonic alignment (octave registration) and accurate scale on A=440. Crafted in well-seasoned African Blackwood, soaked in tung oil, then buffed to a warm glow. An easy-blowing, high-performance flute, designed for maximum playing satisfaction and beauty at an affordable price.

Note: sometimes a wooden flute can shrink around a metal slide, resulting in a crack. To prevent this problem, "SLIGO" has a slender wooden tenon that slides in the head's internal synthetic cork. This proven construction is effective for tuning the instrument without distorting the scale. On the outside of the tenon there are two o-rings that serve as tuning spacers. The crown cap is not linked to the end stopper, thus preserving the factory setting.

Comfortable hole spacing on the left hand (2.86", 73mm) and right (2.70", 69mm). The F# hole is 3/8" (9.5mm) diameter, and the A-hole (#3, left ring) is offset for easy reach. Note: can be special-ordered with zero offset at no extra charge. Lengths are 10" (head), 15.4" (body) or 24.1" assembled (254, 391 and 612mm respectively).

Gives a strong tone throughout its compass, with a respectable presence on E and A, which are sometimes weak on old flutes. "SLIGO" has good honk to cut thru at any session.
